I have to say I have a love hate relationship with the scales. So much so, that I had to break up with them many years ago.
Scales simply messed with my head too much.
They made me feel bad about myself.
The scales went up and then they went down and then they went up…. all in the same day!
Scales made me doubt all my hard work and attention that I was giving my body and my health.
But then I learnt a thing or two about scales and realised, they really aren’t a good indicator of progress, especially for women because our scale weight can fluctuate so much depending on where we are in our menstrual cycle.
So if you are a female, and you are on a weight loss journey right now, I urge you to ditch the scales and try some other approaches that you can easily do at home that will clearly measure your progress.
TAKE PHOTOS
You got to get down to your underwear for this one and in the privacy of your own home, who cares! So once every 4 weeks stand in front of the mirror, or ask a family member to take some photos. Front aspect, side aspect and rear aspect. Doing this every 2-4 weeks will show you the subtle changes and shifts that are occurring in your body over this time
USE AN ARTICLE OF CLOTHING AS YOUR YARD STICK
Go to your wardrobe and grab that pair of jeans 👖, that dress 👗 or something that once fit and is now a bit tight. Use that article of clothing as your yard stick. Try it on once a week, no more than that, and see how it feels on your body.
USE A TAPE MEASURE
Take a measurement every 2-4 weeks and record the number. Around the waist is a good measurement to take because for health reasons alone, we don’t want to store a lot of fat around our abdominal organs. To take this measurement, wrap a tape measure around your waist from the site of your belly button.
REMEMBER
Our progress with our diet and exercise should not just be measured in terms of the physical changes that occur in our body. Pay attention to those emotional changes, the changes to your outlook on life, the changes to your energy levels, the changes to stress levels, the changes to sleep patterns and the changes towards food and healthy living.
